The Golden Road which runs along the east coast of south Harris is known colloquially as the “Golden Road” as it cost so much money to build, when it was built in 1897.
The Golden Road is well worth driving as it weaves around endless charming bays and creeks making its way south along the east coast of Harris to Rodel, where there is a charming dry stone walled harbour. This is where you find St Clements, the most important surviving medieval church in the Hebrides.

At Stockinish, find out when the fishermen come in, then buy fresh prawns off the boat when they arrive. You’ll have to bargain but the prices are still significantly less than anywhere else!
